It's a moment many of our patients have experienced. One second you're chewing on a piece of gum, then suddenly you forget to keep chewing and swallow the entire rubbery gob whole! It's at this point you remember your mother warning you as a child that if you swallow gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your belly for seven years. Dr. Henagan and our team at Henagan Team Dentistry hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter your stomach and move through your digestive system just like any other piece of food. So, if you ever accidentally swallow a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!
That being said, it's important to know that gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not exactly harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are an avid gum-chewer, we encourage you to chew sugarless gum, especially if you are wearing braces, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but has fewer cavity-causing ingredients. In fact, many brands contain an additive called xylitol, a natural sweetener known to fight cavity-causing bacteria. Xylitol is also known to increase salivary flow as it rinses away plaque and acid.
The fact is, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long-term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!
If you have any questions about chewing gum, please contact our office. Happy (sugar-free) gum chewing!

Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day, has been said to originate with a Catholic priest named Valentine several thousand year ago. Valentine defied the emperor at the time by secretly marrying men and their brides after the emperor had made it illegal to marry. Emperor Claudius II did this because he wanted as many single young men to fight in his war as he could get.
Valentine disobeyed the emperor’s edict by continuing to marry couples until he was sentenced to death. Before his execution, he sent a letter to a secret love and signed it “From your Valentine.” Dr. Henagan and our team have come up with some suggestions on how you can celebrate this Valentine’s Day, whether you have a valentine of your own or not.
Valentine's Day Ideas
- Enjoy a tasty treat. There are plenty of options when it comes to cooking and/or baking on Valentine’s Day. Make your significant other his or her favorite meal or sweet treat, or make your own favorite dish to enjoy on this day. Oh, and be sure to make enough for leftovers!
- Make a personalized card. Instead of buying a card from the grocery store, take the time to make your own for a loved one. People love handwritten notes, especially when it’s from someone special. If you’re single this Valentine’s Day, make a card for fellow single friend to brighten the day and remind the person that he or she is also loved.
- Watch a movie. We all know there are plenty of romance movies out there. Put on your favorite romantic comedy, or pick up your significant other’s favorite movie to watch together. Even better, if you’re single, pick up your own favorite movies to watch to pass the time this Valentine’s Day.
- Do nothing! We all know Valentine’s Day can sometimes get a lot of hype. If you’re worried about not making a reservation in time, don’t feel like planning an extravagant night out, or simply not in the holiday mood this year, spend your day sitting back and relaxing.
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and spend quality hours with the people you care about the most. Whether you’re in a relationship or single, take some time today to appreciate those you love in your life.
We wish you a happy Valentine’s Day celebration and look forward to seeing you at our New Iberia, LA office during your next appointment.

It’s hard to believe February is already here but lately the days seem to fly by faster than ever! February is full of events we’ve got marked on our calendar: Acts of Kindness Day, Black History Month, American Heart Month and of course, Valentine’s Day. Even though we often associate February with romance and fancy gifts, we think this month is the perfect opportunity to spread the love to everyone.
When it comes to love, it’s no secret that we love our patients! Next time you’re in the office, take a guess at how many hearts are in our Valentine’s Day vase. You could win a box of chocolates and a $50 gift card to Clementine! Patients who come in on Valentine’s Day will also get a carnation and a special photo shoot with our Valentine’s Day frame.
Call us old fashioned, but there’s nothing more personal than hand writing a letter to family members telling them how much they mean to you. Friendship and love are gifts from God that we are truly grateful for, so make sure you let your loved ones know you care.
Not only is February the month for candy hearts but it’s also American Heart Month. It’s so important to increase awareness about heart disease in order to avoid health problems later on. A great way to set yourself up for a healthy lifestyle is with a heart-healthy diet. We love making healthy versions of some of our favorite foods like potato chips! By baking our own chips at home, they’re still delicious without being dunked in a bunch of frying oil like what you would find in the chip aisle.
In honor of Black History Month, we’re displaying a few bios and pictures of significant figures who fought for civil rights and equality. February 17th is also Acts of Kindness Day! Even though our team will be in Las Vegas for training, that doesn’t mean we won’t be spreading kindness all day long. We encourage all of our patients to participate even if it’s just with something small.
We hope this month is filled with love and kindness for you! Have a wonderful February and don’t forget to help spread the love!

If you suffer from sensitive teeth, you already know the frustration of having a type of pain that is hard to deal with. Because tooth sensitivity is sometimes unpredictable, you can't necessarily take medication to ward off the pain like you could if you just felt a headache coming on.
However, there is still something you can do about sensitive teeth. Use the following tips to help put your sensitivity and pain problems with your teeth behind you!
Use the Right Toothbrush: Select a toothbrush made just for sensitive teeth, or the softest bristles possible. This helps you avoid putting any extra pressure on your teeth or gums.
Choose a Special Toothpaste: There are several good options for toothpastes made just for sensitive teeth today. Usually, toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth will be fluoridated and use a non-abrasive formula. The toothpaste will help with the pain usually associated with brushing and flossing if you use it regularly.
Avoid Trigger Foods: You may have noticed certain trigger foods that cause tooth sensitivity and pain for you. Avoid these foods whenever possible, and if you absolutely must eat them, try to consume them in very small quantities. Trigger foods may include:
- Foods with high acid content for example citrus fruits
- Very hot or very cold foods
- Hard or crunchy foods

If your sensitive teeth problem is too serious to manage on your own, a visit to our New Iberia, LA office may be in order. There are a couple of ways Dr. Henagan can help:
- Fluoride Treatments: We can put a special fluoride formula on the most sensitive areas to help make your enamel stronger and to help lower pain levels.
- Sealing Exposed Roots:In some cases, your roots become exposed due to a receding gumline, which in turn causes teeth sensitivity and pain. We can apply a dental sealant that protects the exposed roots and reduces your pain dramatically.
